Camp Trailer Water Pump Troubleshooting: What to Check First
A practical guide to diagnosing no-flow, sputtering, cycling, leak, and electrical problems in an RV fresh-water pump—and knowing when to call a technician.

An RV fresh-water pump should deliver steady flow whenever you open a faucet and shut off soon after you close it. If the pump is silent, sputters, runs continuously, or cycles when no fixture is open, work through the system in a logical order before replacing parts.
Start safely: Turn the pump off, disconnect its electrical power, and open a faucet to relieve system pressure before opening plumbing connections. Follow the instructions and fuse rating for your specific pump. Do not work on damaged or exposed wiring unless you are qualified to do so.
Start With the Simple Checks
Many apparent pump failures come from the water supply, a valve position, or a power problem rather than the pump itself. Before removing anything, confirm the basics:
- Make sure the fresh-water tank contains enough water.
- Disconnect city water when testing the onboard pump.
- Confirm that the pump switch and the RV’s main 12-volt system are on.
- Check that winterizing, tank-selection, and shutoff valves are in their normal operating positions.
- Look for obvious leaks, loose fittings, kinked hoses, or water beneath the pump.
Locate the pump’s make and model before going further. Features, fuse sizes, pressure settings, and service procedures vary, so the manufacturer’s manual should take priority over general advice.
If the Pump Will Not Start
A completely silent pump usually points to the electrical side of the system. Check the pump fuse or breaker, wall switch, battery condition, wiring connections, and ground. Replace a blown fuse only with the size specified for that pump—installing a larger fuse can create a fire or equipment-damage hazard.
Some pumps have thermal protection and may stop temporarily if the motor overheats. Allow the unit to cool, then determine why it became hot. Low voltage, restricted plumbing, a seized diaphragm assembly, or freeze damage can all increase the load on the motor. If a fuse blows again or the pump repeatedly overheats, stop testing and have the system inspected.
If the Motor Runs but No Water Flows
When you can hear the motor but get little or no water, inspect the inlet side first. A clogged strainer, empty tank, closed valve, kinked supply line, or loose fitting that draws air can prevent the pump from priming.
- Turn off electrical power and clean the inlet strainer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Inspect the tank-to-pump line for restrictions, cracks, and loose connections.
- Restore power, open a cold-water faucet, and allow the pump time to move air out of the system.
- Check other fixtures to determine whether the problem affects the whole system or only one faucet.
Many RV diaphragm pumps are self-priming, and some models are designed to tolerate dry running. Do not assume that applies to every pump. Avoid extended dry operation unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.
If the Water Sputters
Sputtering often means air is entering or remains trapped in the plumbing. Confirm the tank is not nearly empty, then check inlet fittings and the strainer seal for air leaks. Open each fixture briefly to purge trapped air, including the shower and exterior connections. Air can also collect after the water heater has been drained, bypassed, or returned to service.
If only one faucet sputters or has weak flow, clean its aerator and inspect that branch of the plumbing. A system-wide problem is more likely to involve the tank, pump inlet, strainer, or main supply line.
If the Pump Cycles or Will Not Shut Off
A pump that starts with every faucet closed is responding to a pressure drop. Inspect the pressurized side of the system for leaks, including faucets, the toilet valve, exterior showers, low-point drains, and the water heater. Even a slow drip can cause intermittent cycling.
Rapid cycling while water is flowing can result from a restricted aerator, showerhead, filter, or undersized plumbing. Incorrect voltage, trapped air, debris in the pump valves, or a pressure-switch problem may also affect operation. Turn the pump off when the RV is unattended until the cause is found.
If the Pump Is Noisy
Some vibration is normal, but a sudden change deserves attention. Check for loose mounting feet, plumbing that has vibrated against a cabinet, a clogged inlet strainer, air in the lines, or rigid pipe transmitting motor vibration through the RV. Do not overtighten rubber mounting feet; they are designed to isolate vibration.
When to Call an RV Technician
Professional diagnosis is the safer choice when you find damaged wiring, repeated fuse failures, freeze damage, water leaking from the pump head or pressure switch, persistent overheating, or a pump that still will not prime after the supply side has been checked. Internal valve, diaphragm, motor, bypass, and pressure-switch repairs require the correct parts and procedures for the model.
A careful diagnosis can separate a simple clogged strainer or loose fitting from a failing pump. Work from the tank toward the fixtures, make one change at a time, and stop whenever the repair moves beyond your tools or experience.
