Starlink can be included as an optional connectivity feature in a custom Peak Outdoors build. For owners who camp beyond dependable cellular coverage, it can support weather and road checks, communication with family, remote work, and ranch or business needs. The best results come when the antenna, power supply, cable route, and equipment storage are planned with the camp from the beginning.
Plan for your specific equipment and service: Starlink hardware, service plans, coverage, speeds, data allowances, and rules for travel or in-motion use can change. Starlink is a third-party service, and Peak Outdoors does not control its availability or performance. Confirm current requirements with Starlink, follow the instructions for your exact kit, and discuss mounting, power, and cable routing with Peak before the camp is built.
Connectivity that travels with the camp
A cellular hotspot depends on a usable signal from a nearby tower. Starlink communicates with satellites instead, which can make broadband-style connectivity possible in many places beyond dependable cellular coverage. That can be valuable for extended stays, remote work, seasonal operations, hunting camps, and family travel.
Satellite internet is not automatic or universal. The system still needs active service, adequate power, compatible hardware, and a suitable view of the sky. Terrain, trees, buildings, weather, network demand, and the selected service plan can all affect the experience.
Start with a clear view of the sky
Starlink says its antenna needs a clear view of the sky so it can maintain contact with satellites moving overhead. Trees, branches, poles, the camp roof, and nearby terrain can interrupt that path and cause brief or repeated service disruptions.
Use the Starlink app’s obstruction tool at the intended antenna height before settling on a campsite or permanent mount location. A camp parked in dense timber may need a portable setup that can be moved into a clearing. A camp used in open range country may be better suited to a securely planned exterior mount.
Choose between portable and mounted use
A portable arrangement gives the owner flexibility. The antenna can be positioned away from the trailer, trees, or other obstructions and then packed inside for travel. That approach works well when campsites vary or when the owner does not need the system online continuously.
A permanent or travel-ready mount can reduce setup time and keep cables organized, but it must be selected for the exact Starlink hardware and intended use. Any vehicle installation must be secured to a structurally sound location and installed according to the mount and hardware instructions. A setup intended only for stationary use should be stowed before travel.
Plan the electrical load before the build
Starlink becomes another continuous load on the camp’s power system. That matters most when the camp is away from shore power and depends on batteries, solar, or a generator.
For reference, Starlink currently lists average power use of 25 to 40 watts for the Mini, with a 12- to 48-volt DC input rating and a 60-watt maximum input. The company specifies a 100-watt, 20-volt/5-amp USB Power Delivery source when its USB-C accessory cable is used. Other Starlink kits have different requirements. Always size the system around the exact equipment rather than a general estimate.
When planning a custom camp, account for expected daily internet use alongside refrigeration, lighting, water pumps, furnace blowers, device charging, fans, and other loads. Battery capacity, solar production, charging time, wire size, circuit protection, inverter losses, and cold-weather performance all influence how long the system can operate.
Protect the cable route
The antenna location is only half of the installation. The cable must reach the interior equipment without being pinched, abraded, exposed to sharp edges, or routed where water can follow it into the camp.
A planned installation can include an appropriate exterior entry point, strain relief, weather sealing, service access, and a protected path to the router or power equipment. If the antenna will be deployed away from the camp, the storage location and cable-access plan should make setup straightforward without leaving a door or window partially open.
Think about Wi-Fi coverage inside the camp
Metal exterior materials, cabinetry, appliances, and the placement of the router can affect the Wi-Fi signal inside and around a trailer. Locate networking equipment where it can receive ventilation, remain accessible for service, and provide practical coverage to the areas where devices will be used.
The Starlink Mini includes an integrated Wi-Fi router. Other kits may use separate networking equipment. Owners who need coverage in a large camp, an exterior work area, or multiple rooms should confirm compatibility before adding mesh equipment, Ethernet connections, or a third-party router.
Match the service plan to the trip
Starlink markets Roam service for RVs, campers, and travelers. Current plan choices differ by location and may include data-limited and unlimited options, with performance affected by network congestion. Some plans permit in-motion use, but service terms and hardware requirements should be checked before every permanent or moving-vehicle installation.
A practical decision starts with how often the system will be used, how much data the owner expects to consume, whether the camp crosses national borders, and whether connectivity is needed only while parked. Review current options directly on the Starlink website rather than designing a camp around a plan name or price that may change.
Do not make internet your only safety system
Starlink can be useful for forecasts, maps, messages, and general communication, but it still depends on power, equipment, service availability, and an adequate sky view. It should not be treated as guaranteed emergency communication.
Carry offline maps and essential information, share the trip plan, and maintain an appropriate backup such as a satellite messenger, personal locator beacon, radio, or other device suited to the route. Know how to reach help before leaving cellular coverage.
Questions to answer during a custom build
- Will the antenna be portable, permanently mounted, or both?
- Will it be used only while parked or during travel where permitted?
- Where can the antenna obtain a clear view without interference from roof equipment?
- Where will the cable enter, and how will it be sealed and protected?
- Where will the router, power supply, and related equipment be mounted?
- How many hours per day will the system run away from hookups?
- Can the battery bank and charging system support that load with other camp equipment operating?
- Where will portable components and cables be secured during travel?
Connected by design
Starlink connectivity is most useful when the antenna, power system, cable route, storage, and daily routine are considered together. Planning those details early can make setup faster, protect the equipment, and help the owner understand what the system will require in the field.

Bring the specifications for the Starlink kit you expect to use, describe where and how long you camp, and explain whether you need portable or mounted operation. That information gives the team a practical foundation for integrating connectivity into the rest of the build.
