How to Prevent Condensation and Moisture in Your RV

Control humidity, improve ventilation, identify leaks, and protect your RV from recurring condensation and moisture damage.

Condensation is common in an RV because a small living space can collect moisture quickly. Cooking, showering, breathing, wet clothing, and damp gear all add water vapor to the air. When that warm, humid air reaches a cold window, wall, ceiling, or metal frame, the vapor can turn into liquid water.

An occasional fogged window is a useful warning. Water that repeatedly collects on surfaces can stain finishes, damage absorbent materials, and create conditions where mold can grow. The solution is not one product or one open window—it is a combination of moisture control, ventilation, temperature management, and routine inspection.

First, determine whether it is condensation or a leak

Condensation usually appears on cold surfaces and often becomes worse overnight, during cold weather, or after cooking and showering. A leak is more likely to appear after rain, during plumbing use, or around a specific roof penetration, window, seam, fixture, or water line.

Do not assume every wet spot is condensation. Check the roof, doors, windows, vents, exterior seams, plumbing connections, water heater, and air-conditioner drain path. Water can travel behind a panel before it becomes visible, so a stain may not be directly below the source.

Warning signs worth investigating

  • Soft, swollen, stained, or delaminating wall and ceiling material
  • A persistent musty odor
  • Water that returns in the same location after rain
  • Dampness inside cabinets, under mattresses, or behind cushions
  • Discolored sealant or visible gaps around exterior openings

Measure the humidity instead of guessing

A small digital hygrometer makes indoor humidity easier to manage. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent and ideally between 30 and 50 percent when practical. In cold conditions, condensation may begin at an even lower indoor humidity because windows and exterior walls are colder.

Watch the reading during normal activities. If humidity rises sharply while showering or cooking and remains high afterward, the RV needs more ventilation or dehumidification. Also check enclosed spaces; a comfortable reading in the main cabin does not guarantee that the area beneath a mattress or inside an exterior-wall cabinet is dry.

Vent moisture where it starts

Use the bathroom exhaust fan during a shower and leave it running long enough to clear the remaining humidity. Wipe down the shower walls and hang damp towels where they can dry without trapping moisture against an interior surface.

Cooking can release a surprising amount of water vapor. Use a range hood that vents outdoors when available, run a roof fan, or crack a nearby window. Cover pots when practical, and consider cooking outside when weather and campground rules allow. Never use an outdoor grill, generator, or other outdoor combustion appliance inside the RV.

Wet coats, boots, snow gear, and towels should be dried outside or in a ventilated area whenever possible. Avoid storing damp items in a closed cabinet or beneath a bed.

Keep air moving around cold surfaces

Warm air needs a path to reach windows, exterior walls, corners, and enclosed storage areas. Leave a small gap between mattresses or cushions and exterior walls. Open cabinet doors periodically, especially when the cabinet backs up to an outside wall. Move stored items away from surfaces that repeatedly feel cold or damp.

During cold-weather camping, steady heat combined with controlled ventilation is usually more effective than sealing the RV completely. Heat raises surface temperatures; ventilation removes humid air. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for every heating appliance, maintain working carbon-monoxide and smoke alarms, and never use the cooking range as a space heater.

Use air conditioning or a dehumidifier when appropriate

In warm, humid weather, the air conditioner can remove moisture while it cools the interior. Make sure its condensate path is clear and operating as designed. If humidity remains high, a properly sized dehumidifier can help, provided the RV has enough electrical capacity and the unit can drain or be emptied safely.

Disposable moisture absorbers can help in a small cabinet or during short-term storage, but they cannot replace ventilation or a dehumidifier for the whole RV. Keep their collected liquid where it cannot spill, and follow the product instructions.

Dry wet areas promptly

If you find condensation, wipe the surface dry and address the humidity source. If a leak or spill wets upholstery, wall panels, flooring, insulation, or other absorbent material, begin drying it immediately. The EPA recommends drying damp or wet materials within 24 to 48 hours when possible and correcting the source of the moisture.

Clean hard surfaces according to the material manufacturer’s directions and dry them completely. Porous materials that remain wet, smell musty, or show visible mold may require professional evaluation or replacement.

Prepare the RV for storage

Before storage, remove wet fabrics, food, trash, and standing water. Inspect seals and plumbing, dry the refrigerator and shower, and leave interior doors or drawers positioned for airflow when the manufacturer’s guidance permits. Climate and storage conditions matter: a powered dehumidifier may be helpful in a humid location, while dry-air ventilation may be more effective elsewhere.

Check the RV periodically instead of assuming it will remain dry. Look beneath mattresses, inside cabinets, around windows, and near plumbing fixtures. Early detection turns a small moisture problem into a manageable maintenance task.

When to schedule an inspection

Professional help is appropriate when the moisture source is unclear, a roof or wall assembly may be involved, materials feel soft or swollen, mold covers more than a small surface area, or the same problem returns after ventilation and humidity have improved. A technician can inspect seals, plumbing, drainage, and building materials before hidden damage spreads.

Condensation control comes down to a repeatable routine: monitor humidity, vent moisture at the source, maintain airflow, dry wet materials promptly, and investigate anything that keeps returning. Those habits help protect the RV and make every trip more comfortable.
