If your RV has a built-in black-tank flush, use it exactly as directed. A toilet-mounted rinsing wand may be another option when the toilet and tank layout allow direct access, but use a hose dedicated to wastewater service and control spray carefully. Never insert tools that can damage the toilet seal, tank, sensors, or plumbing.

Do not use hazardous shortcuts

  • Do not pour boiling water into the toilet or tank; extreme heat can damage seals, valves, tanks, or plumbing.
  • Do not use household drain opener, caustic chemicals, or products not approved for RV wastewater systems.
  • Do not pressurize the tank or seal a flushing connection in a way that can overfill or rupture the system.

Begin With the Forecast and the Campsite

Check the forecast for your route as well as your destination. Mountain passes, shaded roads, wind, and overnight lows can create conditions that are very different from the nearest town. Review road restrictions, campground access, seasonal closures, and whether snow removal is dependable.

Know what the site will provide. Confirm electrical service, potable water, propane availability, cellular coverage, and the distance to the nearest safe shelter or service location. If the trip depends on a single utility or road remaining open, build an alternate plan before departure.

Inspect the Camp Before You Leave

Cold weather increases the consequences of deferred maintenance. Complete a focused inspection while the camp is still near tools, parts, and professional help.

  • Test the primary heating system. Confirm normal startup, operation, shutdown, and airflow. Follow the appliance manufacturer’s service schedule.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Replace expired alarms and weak batteries. Never disconnect, cover, or silence a life-safety alarm to continue a trip.

Use Heat Without Creating a New Hazard

Use only heating equipment that is installed or approved for the camp and operate it exactly as directed. Maintain required clearances from bedding, clothing, paper products, and other combustible materials. Never use a cooking appliance, charcoal grill, or portable camp stove to heat the interior.

Portable generators produce carbon monoxide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises operating generators outdoors, more than 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents. Generator exhaust must face away from occupied spaces, including neighboring camps. Keep a working battery-powered or battery-backup carbon monoxide alarm inside.

If the camp has a professionally installed wood-burning stove, follow the stove, chimney, and camp manufacturer’s instructions. Inspect the system before the season, use the specified fuel, manage ashes safely, and never improvise a flue or heat shield.

Do not assume that running the furnace protects every water line, tank, valve, and exterior connection. The right approach depends on how the plumbing is routed and insulated, which components are heated, the expected low temperature, wind exposure, and whether the camp will remain continuously occupied.

If the installed system is not designed for the expected conditions, the safer plan may be to drain and winterize it according to the manufacturer’s procedure and carry drinking water separately. Do not combine an active-water plan with storage-winterization steps unless the instructions for your exact system call for it.

People, cooking, and wet clothing add moisture to a small interior quickly. When that warm air meets cold windows, walls, or metal surfaces, water can collect where it is easy to see—and behind furnishings where it is not.

  • Run the range hood and bath vent when cooking or showering.
  • Dry snow-covered boots and clothing in a controlled area rather than against walls or cushions.
  • Keep bedding and stored gear slightly away from cold exterior surfaces so air can circulate.

De-winterizing is more than flushing antifreeze from the faucets. It is the first full systems check of the camping season—and a good opportunity to find leaks, weak batteries, damaged seals, or safety equipment that needs attention before the first trip.

Start with the instructions for your trailer: Plumbing layouts, valve positions, appliances, water heaters, and winterization methods vary by model. Follow the owner’s manuals for your RV and installed equipment. Never energize a water heater until you have confirmed that its tank is full. Have propane leaks, damaged wiring, brakes, and other safety-critical problems inspected by a qualified RV technician.

Choose the right time

Plan to de-winterize a few weeks before your first trip. That leaves time to repair anything discovered during testing. If freezing weather is still possible, work in a protected location or be prepared to winterize the plumbing again.

Before adding water or power, walk around the trailer. Look beneath it and inside storage compartments for signs of leaks, pests, damaged wiring, loose fittings, or anything that changed during storage.

Gather the correct information and supplies

Return the plumbing system to service

Use the trailer’s plumbing diagram to close low-point and tank drains, reinstall the water-heater drain plug or anode rod where applicable, and return winterization valves to their operating positions. Reinstall or replace water filters at the point specified by the manufacturer.

Add potable water or connect a regulated city-water source. Flush each fixture separately until the water runs clear and no antifreeze color or odor remains. Include hot and cold sides, the toilet, shower, outside shower, kitchen sprayer, and any appliance supplied by the fresh-water system.

Inspect every accessible fitting while the system is pressurized. Watch beneath sinks, around the pump, near the water heater, at the toilet, and under the trailer. When using the onboard pump, unexpected cycling while every fixture is closed can indicate a leak or pressure loss that needs investigation.

Fill the water heater before turning it on

After the lines have been flushed, return the water-heater bypass to its normal operating position according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Open a hot-water faucet and allow the tank to fill until water flows steadily without air.

Confirm that the heater is full before switching on its electric element or propane burner. Operating an empty water heater can damage the equipment. Inspect the exterior compartment, drain plug or anode, relief valve area, and nearby plumbing for leaks before heating the water.

Sanitize the fresh-water system

Flushing removes antifreeze, but it does not replace sanitizing. Use the concentration, contact time, and flushing procedure specified by the trailer or component manufacturer and the sanitizer label. Include the fresh-water tank and every connected fixture.

Continue flushing with potable water until the sanitizer is removed as directed. Do not improvise chemical mixtures or combine household cleaners.

Inspect propane and test appliances

Check propane cylinders, mounts, hoses, and visible fittings for damage. If you smell gas, hear a leak, or suspect a problem, close the supply if it is safe to do so, avoid flames and electrical switches, leave the area, and have the system inspected professionally.

Once the propane and electrical systems are confirmed safe, test the refrigerator, furnace, range, ventilation fans, air conditioner, and generator according to their manuals. Give the refrigerator enough time to cool before deciding that it is not operating correctly.

Complete the exterior and towing checks

  • Inspect the roof, windows, doors, vents, seams, and sealant for gaps or damage.
  • Check tires for correct cold pressure, cracking, uneven wear, damage, and age.
  • Inspect the hitch, coupler, safety chains, breakaway system, wiring connector, and exterior lights.

In 2006, Mike Wheeler was hired by Mickel Sheep Company to oversee production of its range camps. He organized the manufacturing process, sourced materials, and brought together the people needed to keep production moving.

Later that year, Mike became the company’s general manager. He remained in that role until 2017.

Weston and Kyler later joined the business. They gained experience in trailer design, construction, production, and customer needs. They also brought new ideas to the shop and continued refining the way the trailers were built.

The family combined practical manufacturing knowledge with professional training. RV service certifications, computer-aided design, and computer-aided manufacturing helped the team plan more accurately and solve problems earlier in each build.

Technology improved precision, but it did not replace hands-on craftsmanship. Both remain important to the way Peak Outdoors works today.

By 2016, the future of the company where the family worked had become uncertain. Mike, Weston, and Kyler had contributed to management, design, sales, manufacturing, and years of strong growth. They were proud of that work, but they wanted to take trailer design and customer service in a different direction.

In early 2017, Mike, Weston, Kyler, and Dave decided to start Peak Outdoors.

The goal was straightforward: build high-quality custom camps at a fair value and work directly with the people who would own them. Being family-owned gave the team the freedom to make decisions around the customer instead of forcing every project into the same standard plan.

How to Keep Mice Out of Your RV: Prevention, Inspection, and Cleanup

Mice need very little space to enter an RV, and once inside they can damage insulation, contaminate stored food, and chew wiring or soft plumbing components. The most reliable defense is not a scented repellent or an electronic gadget. It is a practical combination of inspection, durable exclusion, sanitation, and regular monitoring.

Clean safely: If you find droppings, urine, or nesting material, do not sweep or vacuum it while dry. Wear gloves, wet the material thoroughly with an appropriate disinfectant, allow the required contact time, and wipe it up according to current CDC guidance.

Inspect the RV Before You Seal It

Begin with a bright flashlight and a slow walk around the trailer. If the inspection will take you near electrical, propane, plumbing, or appliance systems, disconnect the applicable power and fuel sources first. Follow the owner’s manuals for your equipment, and leave repairs involving damaged wiring or propane components to a qualified technician.

Pay close attention to places where a small opening may connect the exterior to a cabinet, wall cavity, or underbelly:

  • Plumbing, drain, propane, and electrical penetrations
  • Edges and seams in the underbelly material
  • Storage-compartment doors and exterior access panels
  • Slide-out seals, wheel wells, steps, and stabilizer openings
  • Furnace, water-heater, refrigerator, and other appliance compartments
  • The tongue, bumper, frame rails, and any route that can act as a climbing point

Look for small droppings, shredded paper or insulation, gnaw marks, greasy rub marks, and an unusual musky odor. Trace each sign back toward a likely entry point instead of sealing only the first visible gap.

Seal Entry Points With Durable Materials

A mouse can squeeze through an opening about the width of a pencil—roughly one-quarter inch. That makes seemingly minor gaps around pipes and cables worth addressing.

Use materials that resist chewing and suit the location. Metal mesh, hardware cloth, copper mesh, sheet metal, and purpose-made exterior sealants can work well when installed correctly. For many penetrations, mesh provides the physical barrier while a compatible sealant holds it in place and closes the surrounding edge. Expanding foam by itself is easy for rodents to damage and should not be treated as a durable barrier.

Do not cover appliance vents, combustion-air openings, drains, weep holes, moving parts, or service access. Keep mesh and sealants away from hot exhaust components unless the product and appliance manufacturer specifically allow that application. When a gap is large, irregular, or close to a critical system, have an RV technician fabricate the repair.

Remove Food, Water, and Nesting Material

Exclusion works best when the RV does not offer an easy meal or shelter. Store dry food in rigid containers with tight-fitting lids. Remove pet food, birdseed, snacks, and trash before storage. Vacuum crumbs during routine cleaning—only after any rodent contamination has been safely disinfected and removed—and wipe shelves, drawers, and the spaces beneath appliances.

Repair plumbing leaks, empty standing water, and reduce clutter that can become nesting material. Paper goods, soft fabric, and loose insulation are especially attractive when an RV sits undisturbed. During longer storage periods, remove unnecessary bedding and inspect cabinets and compartments regularly.

Protect Wiring, Insulation, and Plumbing

Rodent damage can be more serious than a torn food package. Inspect visible 12-volt and 120-volt wiring for tooth marks, missing insulation, damaged connectors, or exposed conductors. Check nearby flexible plumbing, ducts, and insulation for similar damage.

Do not simply wrap damaged electrical wiring with tape and return the RV to service. A qualified technician should determine whether the conductor, connector, protective device, or adjacent material must be replaced.
